The Season of Gathering — From Porch Pumpkins to Good Reads
Lily (3), Case (11) and Campbell (8) came all the way from Tennessee to visit their grandparents on Marrowstone.
For Halloween, Lily’s dressing up as a princess dinosaur, Case as a cyberpunk, and Campbell has graduated from princess to scary clown. This sweet trio made daily stops for candy and cinnamon rolls and gave us a 5++ star review! Our “real nice shop” earned five stars for cute stuffed animals, a + for hot chocolate, and another + for ice cream. We’ll take it!
We had a lovely visit with our own Karen and her mom, Janet, who was visiting from Kalispell.
We are thrilled to have Karen on our team and even happier she now calls our island home. Karen keeps our store humming with her trademark smile, but did you know she is also a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (FNTP)? She helps her clients with health and wellness goals and gave our store high marks for quality and selection, especially our carefully tended organic produce. Try the Element Chocolate Covered Rice Cakes Karen curated for us. Healthy, delicious, and perfect for curbing cravings!
Elizabeth and her son Lochlan popped in for fruit and left with smiles as big as their haul—organic figs, pluots, peaches, and bananas.
Then came the sweet extras: a candy necklace, gummi pizza, and a Pane d’Amore cinnamon twist! This dynamic duo is already planning their next trip (by boat) to stock up on toys and ice cream. We can’t wait to welcome them back!
Meet Danica and her crew: Wilder (2), Jed (10) and Juniper (4).
This family loves our store for its warm welcome, fine food, and “so, so good” coffee from Better Living Through Coffee. The kids cheer for our candy jars and ice cream, while mom appreciates no-added-sugar snack options. With a $5 shopping limit, Juniper chose a whistle, baseball-loving Jed grabbed Big League Chew, and Wilder went a bit over budget with his banana wind-up car. These Chimacum locals love Fort Flagler for walks, beach time, and kite flying. We’re so glad you’ve got family on the island so we can see these sweet kiddos regularly!
James and Grace are two of our newest island residents, fulfilling their dream of rural life after moving from Portland to Marrowstone.
They love having cycling, hiking, and open-water swimming on the island. James is a builder and is already geeking out over designs for their future home. Our store helped seal the deal when they bought property here: fresh food, produce, and, best of all, wine and treats just a short walk from home. Welcome new friends!
Evie (4), Mea (11), and June (2) visited from Poulsbo and couldn’t resist a photo op with our porch pumpkin.
They eagerly shared their Halloween plans: Evie will sparkle as Princess Ariel, Mea’s going as a Chipette from Alvin and the Chipmunks, and little June will be the cutest donut with sprinkles. We can’t wait to see the pictures!
Looking to expand your food source beyond the Nordland General Store?
Take a peek at this great blog about mushroom foraging in our local woods, plus a few irresistible chanterelle recipes!
Or, if you’d rather “forage” in the store, pick up some gorgeous oyster mushrooms from Marrowstone Mushrooms while they last.
Join us Saturday, November 8, for a conversation with local author Kelli Estes, author of The Girl Who Wrote in Silk.
This historical novel, inspired by true events, is available at our store. The Jefferson County Library in Hadlock also offers a book club kit. We can’t wait to welcome Kelli, hear about her inspiration and learn more about her writing process. We promise no spoilers for those who haven’t read the book!
Love our fresh goat cheese from Mystery Bay Farm? So do we!
October will be the last month for this very special local goat cheese until February. The pregnant goats need time to gain weight and build babies!
