We need YOU to fully open our Store!

The Nordland General Store is reopening as a community-owned and operated business. You don’t need to be a member to shop at the store, but a membership invests in the renovation and revitalization of the store for years to come. And members will have both a vote in board elections and special shopping opportunities throughout the year.

Why should you join the Nordland General Store cooperative?

Be an owner of a cooperatively run local business

Every member has an equal, democratic voice in the control of our store. The purpose of the store is to serve all of our members. Every member will have the opportunity to vote for the store Board of Directors at an annual Membership Meeting.

Invest in your community

Having a membership at the Nordland General Store is an investment in our island community. The return of our beloved general store will ensure convenient and consistent access to basic groceries and local products, and a community gathering spot. A thriving central market on the island makes Marrowstone an even better place to live and visit, now and in the future.

Members-Only Volunteer Opportunities

Every member will be able to apply for volunteer positions within the store. This will be a great way for members to get to know their store better and to build connections with the entire island community.

Easy access to local and sustainable food and products

The Nordland General Store will work hard to create partnerships with local producers and purveyors of delicious food and quality, locally-made products, as well as the convenience products you depend upon. We will do our best to offer a wide range of healthy and sustainable products. Members will be able to make suggestions about what you want to see on our shelves.

Special deals & member-only opportunities

Throughout the year the store will offer members-only deals, member-only discounts and special opportunities for, well, members-only!

Members-Only Investment Opportunities

Every member has the opportunity to invest in the store by purchasing preferred shares. These shares might have dividend potential in coming years, but the real dividend is knowing you helped to create a vibrant Marrowstone community!

We’re building this together – one member at a time. This is your chance to have a voice and a vote in reopening our general store.

  • “We are just so excited to have the center of the community back!!”

    —Nordland General Store Member

  • “The shopping was second to connecting with the community and supporting the store.”

    —Marrowstone Island Resident

  • “My fondest memory has been the holiday tree lighting with music and dancing in the street. The paper bag lanterns lining the railing were even more beautiful when I realized there were names written on the bags.”

    —Friend of Nordland General Store

  • “Like so many here on Marrowstone, we are so eager to have the store back for practical things like picking up milk and eggs or veggies, but also for the ability to meet other islanders and have a sense of community, in and around the store.”

    —Marrowstone Island Resident

  • A Co-op is an independent, democratic organization owned, operated, and financed by its members. Co-ops serve their members and benefit the communities in which they live by keeping more dollars in the local economy.

Co-ops are fabulous. Cooperation is, after all, a word that implies people working together toward the same end, mutually benefitting both one another and the larger community. Economically beneficial and socially responsible, these community-minded businesses make the world a better place—and that’s a beautiful thing!

  • A lifetime membership share is $250 per household.
