Nordland General Store Friends,

As a community store, we’re in a special position to support anyone who is feeling food insecurity. With a strong and generous member base that is collectively dedicated to supporting both the store and the broader Marrowstone Island community, we believe we can step up our support.

Beginning Wednesday, November 5, we’ll begin a trial launch of the Nordland General Store Community Pantry. The plan is simple. We will collect contributions from community members and will use those contributions to fund the NGS Community Pantry. Our plan is to keep going as long as we have donations to support the pantry.

If you’re in a position to contribute, you can simply add funds to the Nordland General Store Community Pantry account at the store—by cash, check, or credit card. Donations are not tax-deductible, but every dollar helps our community and every contribution matters.

If you live on Marrowstone Island and could use a little extra help, we hope this program can offer that support. Anyone in need may purchase up to $50 of groceries free of charge once per calendar month. All you need to do is say “Community Pantry” to our cashiers at check out and they’ll do the rest.

Eligible items include: produce, grocery staples, dairy, frozen foods, and fresh-to-go items. Non-eligible items include alcohol, non-food household or self-care products, and gift or merchandise items.

We plan to operate the Nordland General Store Community Pantry on an honor system. We will not ask for names, proof of need, or track individual purchases.

We will operate the Community Pantry transparently, reporting regularly on donations received, funds used and the remaining balance.

This is a new effort, and we know we’ll learn as we go. But together, we can make a difference for islanders who need a hand.
