It’s Official!
We are so excited to launch our membership drive for the Nordland General Store, and we are off to a rousing start! As an integral part of the Marrowstone Island community, the store is not just reopening; it’s being revitalized as a community-owned cooperative.
A little background: in the summer of 2023 a group of passionate Islanders formed the initial all-volunteer nine-member founding board to breathe life back into this cherished gem. Their collective vision was to revive the Nordland General Store as a community-owned and operated cooperative (co-op), ensuring its sustained success through collective participation and support.
“Our island’s heartbeat, the Nordland General Store, will resonate once more as a warm and welcoming space emphasizing community and local support,” expressed founding board member Patti Buckland. The store’s plans focus on showcasing the richness of local farmers, producers, and artisans, prioritizing fresh and high-quality products that reflect the island’s personality. Central to this revival is the invitation to the community to become members of the Nordland General Store cooperative. At present, the store seeks to enlist 300 members, with over 200 already on board since we started the membership drive on January 16, 2024. Lifetime memberships, available at $250 per household, promote ownership and a voice in the store’s leadership through voting for the Board of Directors. Exclusive deals, discounts, and unique opportunities await members throughout the year.
“While membership is encouraged, everyone is welcome to shop and engage with us at the store,” emphasized founding board member Barcy Fisher. We will be a store for everyone!
To offer more insights and answer queries, the Nordland General Store welcomes all to a drop-in session on Saturday, January 27th, from 10 AM to 2 PM at the store location. Members of the founding board will be present to connect with the community and provide detailed information about this exciting venture.
